Random photo: Master and commander

P.S I don't know if you feel the same way but to me this photo is SO FASHION. It has a photographer, photo equipment, a mulberry bag, a skirt made of feathers, a skinny girl, a magazine, and fast-paced (almost anxious) movement forward.. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that these two are heading to a fashion show xx

Random photo: In the light

P.S. I took this photo through a window of a moving bus in Paris. We were turning the corner when I saw this beautiful girl standing at the lights. I just thought it looked so romantic. And yes I know the angle is wrong and it's overexposed but sometimes random moments like these remind me why 'this whole photography thing' came about and became part of my life... Hope you've all had a good week! xx

to process or not to process that is the question...

If you have been following my blog for a little while you would know that I am not a huge fan of processing (by processing I mean various Photoshop magic) my photographs. This is partly due to me actually preferring the photograph in its 'raw' form and partly to me not possessing any Photoshop ability whatsoever...

Having said that, I do very much enjoy the vintagey yellowy look in photos.. I think it can sometimes give the photo character and tell a story in a certain way... On the other hand every time I do it to my photos I cant help but feel like a bit of a cheat. A typical dialogue in my head would go something along the lines of:

"ooh that looks pretty! .. actually that looks reaaaally cool. i like it."
"uhm! yeah.. anyone with a bit of training can make a photo look cool in photoshop... what, you couldn't take a good/interesting/exciting/[insert adjective] photo to start with so you now have to process it?"

this is probably the reason why a lot of those 'processed' photos don't actually make the blog.. what do you guys think? and i guess, what do you enjoy more?

p.s. just to clarify I do occasionally adjust exposure and the colour palette (but not in photoshop)

sharing the love...

When someone is doing something you like I think it is only fair to share the love.... This is my friend P, who has been doing photography for only a little while and I think has a really good 'eye'. P is also an ACP convert and we both had the same teacher.

I have learnt something very important from P - you cannot fully appreciate someone else's photography style or photography 'eye' (call whatever you want really) until you shot something with them.

This is hard to explain... but when you see a photo on flickr or some blog you think "oh, wow, pretty photo!" but you dont know what the actual subject or the surroundings looked like so you are only given the image from that photographer's perspective. But when you are there to see what the location/subject/person looks like and then you see the photograph you can appreciate the full extent of the photographic ability. I personally think that technical ability in photography is something that is just a matter of time.. but the 'eye' well you either have it or you don't.

I shot at the same location (or the same subject) as P a couple of times now and every time I am absolutely startled by how someone can capture the same thing you see (and capture) in SUCH a different way... You'd think same place, same people, same object.. how different could it be?! Well, works out - REALLY different! Anyhow.. enough of rambling

photos, people, photos

Looking through my pictures the other day my friend A asked me why I like taking photos of other people taking photos... To be honest it's never occurred to me before, but I guess I like their.. honesty..?

Since I started doing photography, I've realised how hard it is to get a candid shot, especially if your camera or lense (or both) is the size of a bazooka... As soon as a person hears the shutter go off they instantly stare at the camera or worse strike a pose.

When a photographer is taking a photo they are completely absorbed in the moment, trying to figure out the shutter speeds and apertures, capture the moment... most of the time they either dont notice you taking a photo of them or simply dont care...
